Michael Halligan

Design & Development

Mike’s a little rare in digital circles. Most are pure designers or pure coders. Mike grew up loving design and from his early teens had a knack for design & photography before teaching himself to code while still in high school.

Love Shop ShareFrom age twelve he started working for his fathers business, rolling out a re-designed range of corporate stationary for the decade-old business. As the business grew it was time to build a new website and booking system for their collection of worldwide short-courses.

Being a cocky kid he put his hand up and said he could do the website, without knowing a thing about web design. Over the next six months he learnt to code HTML, CSS & PHP, designing and building Project Performance Internationals website and booking system (It’s still being used today!)

As he grew older and saw the impact that design and technology was having on the fast-growing business (it was named in BRW’s Fast 100 list), he became more and more intrigued with marketing and entrepreneurship.

His post-High-School years saw him travel the world, study in RMIT’s Entrepreneurship degree, all while launching two businesses on the side.

It was the second – a WordPress blog design agency that he started and later sold after noticing the fast-rise of WordPress as an easy-to-use website platform – that he started spending more time designing & coding for brands. After carving out a niche working on high-end womens fashions blogs like Love Shop Share, he started working with some emerging fashion labels – one of them being Sydney-based ZANEROBE.

Soon enough he found a few of his clients wanting to turn their blogs into online stores and his eCommerce journey began. Mike was one of the first developers in the world to specialize in WooCommerce stores, using and assisting it’s development pathway in the early days.

He is a marketing mentor and writer for StartupSmart magazine and his marketing and development skills have been utilised by Triple M, Yellow Pages and award-winning retailers Ballistyx and Coldflow, among many others.

Mike is also the founder and product designer of BodyWise, a health and fitness iPhone app side-project.

Behind The Scenes

“My work life is almost entirely at a desk and screen so you’ll find me outside at any chance I get. I like a bit of everything, snow and surf, footy and soccer, travel and downtime at home.

I kind of just appreciate things that involve passion and people that manage to pull of designing their lives around what they love. Somedays that might mean a morning at a cafe reading about awesome brands and checking out work from my favourite designers and other days it might mean hanging out at a local beer garden with some mates planning the next adventure or watching my Sydney Swans play footy.

The more that you experience the more you’re inspired to do better work and the more passion you have to push the limits of what you know.”
